How to get to the top of the Cinquantenaire arches
Did you know you can get up to the top of the arches of Parc du Cinquantenaire in Brussels? We had heard whiff of it, but information isn't exactly abundant in this little country of ours. With two months left to cross off items on our to-do list here, we made it our mission last weekend to find out.But how do we get up there? Step one. Start in the Military museum. If you're on the side with the water fountain looking at the arches, it's the one on your right. We'd been in the museum before, a couple of times actually, and by-passed the blank white door that appeared to lead to nothing. I think J even stopped me from opening the door, which happens a lot with a level of curiosity such as mine.Turns out, if you follow it, it leads to a whole nother quarter in the museum! A new-ish, well-kept quarter at that. Next step. Just to the left of the museum entrance (which is free), follow the few stairs up to the left, past the armored soldiers...it's okay, they're in a glass casing. Again, it doesn't look like you should be allowed here, but persevere, my friend. I guess that's another step. Here's a bunch of steps. There's actually a great deal of stairs. More than you think. They've conveniently provided more museum corridors along the way up, so you can pretend you're boning up on your military history while you're actually catching your breathe.
