Cœur de Pirate concert at Bimbo's, San Francisco // with exclusive interview with lead Béatrice MartinThe velvet curtains rippled up above. Sophie Auster set the tone for an evening of quirky commentary and soulful sounds. The famous Bimbo's theater twinkled in suspense for what it could expect next. Béatrice followed her band onstage to a roaring crowd. A night of French and English intertwined. She's a tricky combo of humble, clever, and endearing all in one and moved with the confidence well beyond her years. At once, she covered the Rolling Stones (les pierres qui roulent, she referenced with a smirk), holding her own as if the fellas were actually on stage instead of just her solo cover via piano. It was the first song they played in guitar, a testament to how well she plays the instrument Béatrice said. And then rocked it.Exclusive interview with Béatrice Martin from Cœur de Pirate after the jump!Cœur de Pirate concert at Bimbo's, San Francisco // with exclusive interview with lead Béatrice Martin

Annie: Where did the name Cœur de Pirate come from?

Béatrice: It comes from the first name that I had for the project, which was Her Pirate Heart. I switched when I started singing in french.

A: What motivates you? Why do you create music?

B: Everything, from my travels to what happens in my life, to the fact that I get to share something collectively. I love that someone can just take a song and make it into whatever they think it is.A: How does it feel performing on stage in front of a crowd?B: It's so stressful just before and then once on stage it's as if I've always been able to do this. Haha!Cœur de Pirate concert at Bimbo's, San Francisco // with exclusive interview with lead Béatrice MartinA: What was the first song you performed in front of a crowd?B: I think it was something classical and I was like 5? Very nerve wracking.A: Is any one song the most meaningful to you? If so, which one?B: Crier tout bas, off the new record, is the one that hits closer to home probably... it really is a song I wish I would've heard back when I was going through rough stuff.A: How do you balance being a wife + mom and being on the road?B: I try to do my best. I'm not perfect and I miss my family more than anything, but I try my best by scheduling properly and bringing them out whenever I can.Cœur de Pirate concert at Bimbo's, San Francisco // with exclusive interview with lead Béatrice Martin
